It’s been a long time coming for DC fans. Sure, we’ve had Superman & Batman movies. Other A-List super heroes have been relagated to animation, until this weekend.
I’m a DC Fanboy. Green Lantern is one of my favorite heroes (Alan Scott specifically) and I have only been able to see him in cartoons up til now. No, I haven’t forgotten about the live action Justice League movie from the 90’s. I have it on DVD. That Green Lantern dresses like Guy Gardner and has the attitude of Kyle Raynor.
This movie was pretty damn good. The origin was changed up a bit, but that’s been updated so many times now anyway. I was initially worried about Parallax being the villian. Galactus from the second Fantastic Four movie keep creeping into my head. With not a lot of people knowing about Green Lantern (non-comic reading people), I guess that it didn’t matter who the villian was. they wouldn’t have known who it was anyway.
Making Fear the villian was a decent set-up fro the rest of the spectrum in later movies. i do hope that they don’t go down the road of making Hal the villian though.
Ryan Reynolds. I was a bit worried at first that he was cast as Hal Jordan. I mean this guy was Deadpool and Hannibal King in two seperate marvel movies. I digress, he did a wonderful job as the cocky Hal Jordan. I look forward to watching the character grow a little more during subsequent movies.
Blake Lively. As Carol Ferris. Didn’t care for her. She could have been any number of faceless starlets. She did nothing for the story or the character. I do look forward to seeing Carol as Star Sapphire in, hopefully the next film.
Peter Sarsgaard. Hector Hammond. Not my first choice of GL villians that i wanted to see on the screen, but man he tore it up! He really got into it and had fun with it. Just a great turn for Mr. Sarsgaard.
Mark Strong. Is he not going to be the best bad ass villian ever? Even as the heroic Sinestro, he was stained. He is one that I enjoy watching chew the scenery up as a bad guy. I.E. Kick-Ass and Sherlock Holmes. Yellow power rind indeed.
Clancy Brown as the voice of Parallax! For those of you keeping score, he was the voice of Lex Luthor on the Superman animated series as well as Justice League Unlimited!
Michael Clarke Duncan as the voice of Kilowog! Nice! Also not his first foray into the comic book world. he was Kingpin in Daredevil. Also, he was in Sin City! That seems like forever ago.
Tim Robbins as Senator Hammond. This guy was in the first ever Marvel movie! That’s right, Howard the Duck!
Geoffrey Rush as Tomar-Re. I loved it! It added the aire of distinction that I always thought that he had!
Taika Waititi as Thomas Kalmaku was a bit of a scene stealer. Which was good. the character had been handles oh so wrong in the original GL stories back in the 50’s. Needless to say, his racist nickname was left out of this, all for the better.
The special effects were spot on. I was a little concerned with the CGI costumes, but they were probably the best choice.
I look forward to the growth of Hal’s character. The turning of Sinestro. The loss of Carol. And maybe, just maybe a back-up to sector 2814’s GL. Yes, John Stewart was in this one in nothing more than a cameo. We’ll see what the future brings for the GL franchise.
The 2000’s may have been the decade for Marvel movies. The 2000 teens are all about DC baby!
I attended a funeral today. A young man that I have fond memories of. He was 19 years old. He committed suicide, in part or whole, because of a girl. The circumstances of the incident, and the incident itself are not what this about.
How do you maintain a level of decorum at a funeral where the “friends” try to usurp the preceeding and make it about their connection to the descedant? When you have a jackass get up in front of everyone and state that his friends, whom said jackass points out, are his “family” more than anyone in the room, because you spent everyday for the last 6 months with him.
Really? Where were you for the other 18 and a half years dipshit? Where were you when he was toilet training? I’m pretty sure that was his mom, not you, changing his dirty pants.
Where were you on the first day of school? I’m pretty sure that was his mom waving goodbye that day.
Where were you during his first fight? I’m pretty sure that was his brother who stood beside him and either kicked ass or got his ass kicked, not you.
Where were you when he got in trouble with the law? Did you bail him out? No, I think that was his real family.
Where were you Monday night true family? No where that it mattered.
How dare you belittle the ties that were forged over a lifetime, regardless of how short said life was.
Normally I would never wish this on anyone, but man I hope you get yours.
You are an ignorant ass that hasn’t lived any life at all. You and your band of equally ignorant jackasses can all go fuck yourselves.
