I have been playing this game for little over 2 years now. I first bought cards when my oldest son was going to come live with me. He was an avid player of Magic & Yu-Gi-Oh. Ask anyone who knows me, I am not a sword and sorcery person. I figured if I could find a trading card game (TCG) that I could get into, then there’d be something that we could do together. So, I bought my first set of cards. Long story short, my son did not come to live with me.
Those cards set for a long time. It wasn’t until I moved to Michigan at the end of 2008 and met some guys up there that played that I really got hooked. I finally made some friends up in Michigan via this game. I remeber the first night of learning how to play. Jason, Chops, & Kyle were the teachers. Joe, Becker, & myself were the padawans. Chops made me a deck. We played teams and it was fucking awesome!
All the fellas were Marvel guys. I was the only DC dude in the bunch. We’d go to Jasons place and play and kill a few hours. Once we got into it, we had to find bigger digs.
We started playing at Joe’s house. Eric, Jade, Kevin, & James started playing as well. It was damn near a weekly thing! Eric went DC with me. We had epic battles! Long hours of game play. There were nights that I didn’t get out of there until 6 am!
When I first started, I never won. I had never played a TCG, and I didn’t know how to build a deck. I just liked hanging out with my friends and playing. The neat thing is, at about this time, my kids got into it too!
My oldest daughter, Brittany, really took to it like a fish to water! I had never been more proud of her! They even joined me for a Vs battle at Joe’s house once or twice.
As bad as this may sound, when I broke up with my then girlfriend and decided to move back to Indiana, the only thing that I had regrets about was that i wouldn’t be able to play this game with my friends.
I moved to Indiana.
The small fortune I had invested in these cards had seemed to be wasted.
I got reaquainted with old friends. I made new friends. Then one day, I was talking Now, there is a core group of fourabout this card game that I had learned to play in Michigan. I found out that one of my new friends, Will, also played. He hadn’t played in a while. I started to bring cards to work and we would play on our lunch breaks.
We got more people interested. Jeremiah & Katina were the first. Lauren played. Nich tried it once.
Now, there is a core group of four. Will, Chris, Tony, & I. We play once a week. Usually Sunday nights. It is probably my favorite time of the week. A silly card game, great friends, and just a simple, lo-tech good time. I love it!
The next big thing for this group? Travel to Michigan to take on the old group!
Now, I’m going to buy some cards!
